In my last blog I talked about what makes Hydref Accounting different. I was talking to a client who joined me last year after working with three other practices none of whom suited his business type or size. Here’s their story…
After twelve years of being in business, I’ve had the rather unique experience of working with three different accountants. Each relationship taught me something valuable about what to look for, and what to avoid, when choosing professional accounting support for your business.
The Big Practice Years: Small clients were an afterthought
My journey began with a large, well-established accounting practice. I landed there not through careful research but because a relation had suggested using their accountants when I started. At the time, this felt like a stroke of luck, as my relative was one of their major corporate clients surely being associated with a big, well-known firm would mean excellent service?
The reality was quite different. Whilst the practice had impressive offices and plenty of resources, I quickly discovered that small self-employed clients like me were rather low on their priority list. My queries would take days to receive responses, and I often felt like I was bothering them with what they clearly considered trivial matters. The annual fees were substantial, but the personal attention was minimal.
The breaking point came when I realised, I was paying premium prices for what was essentially a factory-line approach to self-assessment returns. There was no strategic advice, no forward planning, and certainly no genuine interest in helping my business grow. After three years, I knew it was time to move on.
The bare minimum approach: Getting what you pay for
My second accountant came recommended by another self-employed friend who praised their “no-nonsense, affordable approach.” This should have been my first warning sign. Whilst the fees were certainly more reasonable, I soon learned that you truly do get what you pay for.
This accountant’s entire relationship with me seemed to revolve around one annual interaction: preparing my self-assessment return. There were no quarterly check-ins, no advice on allowable expenses, no guidance on tax planning, and absolutely no proactive communication throughout the year.
When I did reach out with questions about legitimate business expenses or potential tax implications of business decisions, responses were terse and unhelpful. It felt like I was paying someone to simply input my figures into their tax software once a year. Any actual accounting advice or business support was clearly beyond the scope of what they were willing to provide.
After three frustrating years of this bare-bones service, I realised that whilst saving money on accounting fees might seem attractive initially, the lack of proper guidance was probably costing me far more in missed opportunities and suboptimal tax planning.
The Growth-Focused Firm: Modern tools, mismatched priorities
My third accountant represented a marked improvement in terms of modernisation and efficiency. They introduced me to Xero, which revolutionised how I managed my bookkeeping and gave me real-time insights into my business finances. The cloud-based system was a game-changer, and I was genuinely excited about the possibilities.
However, this enthusiasm was dampened by their approach to client support. Whilst they were happy to set up the Xero system for me, training was conspicuously absent. I was essentially left to figure out the software myself, learning through trial and error rather than proper guidance.
More concerning was their obvious focus on acquiring larger, more lucrative clients. It became clear that micro businesses like me were viewed as stepping stones rather than valued long-term clients. And that’s when I met Kath from Hydref at a networking meeting.
Why is Hydref Accounting different?
As this client has discovered, when you choose to work with Hydref, you’re working directly with me, a fully qualified accountant with real-world experience. No faceless junior team members, just genuine, hands-on professional service.
I deliberately maintain a small, carefully selected client base because I’m not chasing growth for growth’s sake. I work because I genuinely love what I do, operating from my home office.
This approach delivers exceptional value for my clients. My clients discover what it means to have a truly invested accountant in their corner. Someone who genuinely wants to see their business succeed and thrive.
